Homework

Hi all!

I have loved meeting so many families during this interview period, and am looking forward to another round tonight. I so appreciate your support towards me this term, and know that the remainder of the year is going to be great.

Tonight, the children have been asked to complete page 49 in the blue Communicating Skills book. There is a Music exam and French dictee on Tuesday of next week, and a Multiplying and Dividing Fractions test on Wednesday. Reviewing these concepts now would be a great strategy for studying.

Enjoy the sunshine!

Science Fair

Ms. Craig, our Grade 5 Science lead, has created a website to help students with the next steps of the Science Fair project. This is information that is useful for all Grade 5 students, so enjoy!

Homework

Hello!

I hope that everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather - what a wonderful time to be living in Vancouver!

Spelling words this week are based on frequently mis-spelled words in student writing. Hopefully this week will help clear up any uncertainty about their use:
  • there
  • their
  • they're
  • I'm
  • can't
  • they've
  • haven't
  • we'll
  • you're
  • wasn't

There is a bright yellow review sheet in the agenda tonight that covers the main review topics for the Poetry test on Wednesday. The students have also packed their Poetry file in their bags to help them study.

A reminder that because of Parent/Teacher interviews this week, dismissal on Wednesday and Thursday is at 1:55. Please make necessary pick-up arrangements.

Please send in Bowling permission forms tomorrow (both blue and yellow sheets so I can organize pick-up arrangements from the bowling alley)

Thank you!

What a week!

The kids were amazing this week! Our SMARTboard is installed and looks wonderful. I'm still learning about the details of the fun and interactive board and on Friday we used it to display the work of Keith Haring, a graffiti artist remembered for his lively colours and reoccurring symbolism.

The end of the day came quickly on Friday and, as a result, I would like to just post some reminders.

The Science Fair projects are great - we have completed the Question and Hypothesis in class, and many children have begun the Procedure. I would like the children to type up the Procedure for Tuesday, so that we can edit it together in the labs during the week. Guidelines for the Procedure can be found in the Science Fair booklet in your child's yellow and purple Science Fair folder.

5G and 2M (our grade 2 buddy class) have planned a bowling trip - there are two notices about this in the agenda (blue and yellow papers). Please sign and return for Monday. Thank you!

Enjoy your weekend!

Homework update...

Hi all,

To reiterate the information that is going home in the agenda...

Friday is Jump Rope for Heart, so pledge forms need to be returned by that day.

Page 94 in the Communication Skills book needs to be complete by Friday.

Music homework: Theory Package (rests, ledger lines, bass clef) is due Tuesday, February 26th.
-Basketball members must hand their homework in ON MONDAY (they are fully aware of this
responsibility!)

...thank you!

Civvies Day on Friday, February 22nd

Just a reminder that the children can wear civvies on Friday! There is a Bottle Drive that morning during drop-off, and the hope is that each family will bring in three bottles (or a $20 cash donation) towards the Spring Fair.

Popular bottled items include:
  • Wine, port or liquor (please only send these items if you are accompanying your child to school - no liquor on the bus!)
  • Gourmet vinegars and olive oils
  • Bubble baths, perfumes and hand creams
It is important to remember that homemade items, bottled water and expired items cannot be accepted due to health regulations.

Thank you!

Monday, Monday

We are back for another great week!

The children delivered wonderful speeches last week, and the three judges choose Safir and Conor to represent 5G at the semi-finals on Thursday. Congratulations! Katarina and Jeremy were chosen by our judges to represent 5B, and I am so proud of how hard everyone worked for this special event! I am so grateful for all of your support to make the Valentine's Day party such a success!

I handed back the Chapter 8 Science tests today and I ask that you please sign the first page and return the test to school tomorrow. The class average was an impressive 88%! I am so pleased to see the level of preparation the class in investing in comprehension of the material, and can't wait to delve into Chapter 9 (Renewable Resources).

Our spelling words this week are derived from our environment unit (there were quite a few spelling errors on the test!). The test will be on Friday:
  • environment
  • sustainable
  • aluminum
  • resource
  • renewable
  • salmon
  • selective
  • ecosystem
  • pollution
  • leaching
Tuesday will have the children handing in their Music Theory and Music History packages to the Music department. There is also a dictee tomorrow for the French department.

There is a Problem Solving test on Friday, February 22nd and the children received a review sheet today to prepare. Emphasizing the need to read the question carefully will help your child succeed!

Our math sets are beginning the multiplication and division of fractions on Tuesday. Here are a few neat websites if you want to reinforce these concepts at home throughout the week:

http://www.mathsisfun.com/fractions_multiplication.html

http://www.321know.com/fra66mx2.htm
(the blue Practice box is an interactive space for the children to practice these skills)

The sun is shining and the students are in high spirits - it is going to be a great week!

Reminders for the week

Hello! I hope that everyone enjoyed their long weekend. I am glad to be back for this exciting week.

Here is an overview of this week as it looks from this fine (and rainy) Tuesday lunch:

Wednesday:
Science Chapter 8 test. Check out this link for an online Chapter 8 quiz! http://www.nelson.com/nelson/school/elementary/science/
bcscienceprobe/0176282807/student/quizzes.html

(It is on two lines because this blog won't allow long lines of continuous text, but if you copy and paste both of the lines above into your browser, it should work!)

Thursday:
Parent speech party (Students to wear number one uniform)
Please return interview request forms by this day.

Friday:
In-class speech judging (Students to wear number one uniform)
Spelling quiz
Music homework: White Belt and Yellow Belt Test (recorder karate!)
**Also, some students haven't handed in their music theory assignment because they couldn't find the website. It is www.musictheory.NET and not www.musictheory.COM. The music team would like this by Friday.

Homework

Tonight would be a great time to review for several upcoming quizzes and tests.

Thursday:
  • Science Chapter 8 vocabulary word quiz. Success on this quiz requires knowing the bolded words in the chapter (these words and definitions are in the children's Chapter 8 work book so that they won't need to carry the heavy text back and forth).
  • Open House! Please wear number one uniform.

Friday:
  • Math Fractions test
  • Spelling quiz
  • Founder's Day! Please wear number one uniform.

Dressing for the weather...

Hello everyone!

As the weather continues to be so unpredictable, please send your child to school dressed warmly for morning and lunch recess. We are finding that a track suit jacket is not warm enough outside, so a heavier winter jacket, mitts, a hat and good winter boots are increasingly necessary. It is better to be over prepared. Your support at home is really appreciated so together we can ensure that your child is safe in potentially slippery conditions and warm and dry so that he or she can be comfortable and focused during academic times. Please label these items with your child's name so we can ensure they make it home, as well.

Thank you!

Grade 5 takes over the Vancouver Aquarium!

We had a wonderful time at the Vancouver Aquarium on Friday night! We all learned many new things by exploring the space and from the knowledgeable and entertaining Aquarium Guides. Here are some photos from an evening we won't soon forget!

What this week will look like...

Hello all! I hope you are enjoying your weekend! I just wanted to give you an idea of how this week (and a little into the next) will look:

Science: Chapter 8
  • Vocabulary quiz on Thursday, February 7th
Students can study from their booklets completed in class. If they wish to take a textbook home to aid their studying, I ask that your child returns to school with the textbook as we do not have a full class set and texts at home make class work difficult.
  • Chapter 8 unit test on Wednesday, February 13th
A review for this test will be sent home on Monday (keep your eyes peeled for a green piece of paper in the agenda!)

Science: Science Fair

By the week's end, students will have their Question and Hypothesis completed. A bright yellow paper outlining the dates of this project will also be in the agenda.

Spelling

New week, new words! We will work in class on spelling patterns and word meaning. A copy of the words will be sent home so students will not need to take these words back and forth for the week. The spelling quiz is on Friday, February 8th.

Math

Fractions test on Friday, February 8th. To help your child with this test, it would be useful to review multiplication facts up to 12 (a necessary skill for equivalent fractions and converting between mixed and improper fractions) and by working through the material sent home by your child's math set teacher.
